Gizzell Ford, nicknamed “Gizzy”, had the kind of smile that stuck with you. A spark of curiosity in her eyes. A love of school and the ambition to be a doctor when she grew up.

Gizzy is bright, warm, and polite. Although she is only eight years old, her maturity is masked by abuse and torment from her family.

In the spring of 2013, eight-year-old Gizzy was temporarily placed under the guardianship of her grandmother, Helen Ford.

Because of her parents' divorce, Helen, who originally did not want to take in Gizzy, had no choice but to take her in. However, this grandmother, who had never met Gizzy, showed her no affection, and her eyes and words were filled with contempt and impatience.

Her classmates later noticed that this once lively and cheerful little girl had suddenly become taciturn, absent-minded, and even often appeared frightened and exhausted. Her teachers also began to worry about Giz's physical and mental health: she was becoming increasingly thin and frail. Her grandmother, Helen, explained that because candy was bad, she no longer gave Giz any sweets.

In fact, the Department of Children and Families Services (DCFS) needs to conduct frequent home visits. Grandma Helen's apartment was filthy, littered with garbage. The small house was not only messy and corrupt, but it was also constantly plagued by ants, flies, and cockroaches. All these problems were documented by the DCFS, but they didn't seem to care.

In my opinion, the most inhumane cruel staff of the system, was a pediatrician by the name of Dr. Norell Rosado.

In June 2013, during a routine check-up, Dr. Rosado noticed bruises, abrasions, scabs, and loop-shaped marks on her body, particularly her thighs and buttocks; all signs that are associated with physical trauma. However, he dismissed these marks as “unimportant,” “non-specific,” and not indicative of abuse. So in nothing short of mind-boggling, he concluded that the injuries were all self-inflicted and therefore he didn’t notify DCFS, not that it would have done much good, because that same month, DCFS workers again visited the Ford home where they found Gizzy with blood around her mouth and open sores on her body.

Helen claimed that Giz was a liar and a troublemaker, and that she had hit herself. The irresponsible DCFS workers left.

However, less than a month later, eight-year-old Gizzell "Giz" was tortured to death! The scandal of abuse that had taken place in their family over the past eight months shocked the world!

Dear Diary

Like many girls her age, Giz kept a diary. The cover was striped with rainbows, and she used a pink marker pen to write down her innermost thoughts.

Her first few entries focussed on typical third-grade topics such as jumping rope, her teachers, clothes, and friends. But by late spring/early summer of 2013, the diary entries were chaotic and incoherent.

Giz's diary entries were short and fragmented, sometimes showed hope, sometimes filled with hopelessness. It's heartbreaking that we only discovered these entries too late, but they reveal a chilling truth: a little girl who, after suffering cruel abuse, still believed it‘s because she was not good enough and still trying to be a "good girl."

One entry read,

"Hope I won't be scolded today, because I really want to have a chance to sit down and watch TV and play with toys."

Then underneath it, in pencil, in what I guess was an update, she had had written,

“I’m a failure. I hate this life because they say I’m a big trouble.”

Another entry said:

"I will behave and do everything I'm told, and I won't be punished if I don't talk."

And what were those punishments?

She was being beaten, starved, gagged, and tied up for hours. The pole she would be tied to was attached to her dad’s bed, where she was used as a human punching bag, often beaten until she lost control of her bladder and bowels.

As a form of control and humiliation, she was forced to squat for long periods of time, sometimes overnight, could not even sleep.

Despite all this, she blamed herself, thought it was her fault. This is because it's a consequence of long-term abuse. Even the strongest-willed adult can be broken by prolonged torment. Let alone an eight-year-old child.

The child care department, pediatricians, teachers, classmates, neighbors, and everyone else missed opportunities. All those moments that could have been spent saying, "This is wrong! This is serious abuse and torture!" were missed.

And what about little Gizzy? She kept suffering.

In one of her last few diary entries, she wrote:

"I am going to be a beautiful, good, and kind young lady. I want to do everything to make my family to love me."

That was the quote that broke my heart into a million pieces, because even after experiencing all of this, despite suffering physical pain, torment, humiliation and abuse, this little girl still naively believed that she had a future? Just endure it and it will pass?

She still believed she was going to get out from the control and torment?!

The shocking abuse that shocked the world

Besides Gitz's diary, there are also devastating video clips, filmed on a mobile phone. One clip shows her grandmother, Helen Ford, berating a terrified-looking Gizzy for breaking house rules. In the video, Gizzy stood still in the video with a sock stuffed in her mouth. Another video shows her swaying drowsily, her hair disheveled, her eyes distant, while her grandmother and father taunted and shoved her.

Grandma would slap Giz's mouth with a spatula, force her to eat hot peppers or make her stand in odd positions for hours on end. If Gizz cried in pain, Grandma would stick a sock into her mouth to shut her up.

What's infuriating is that they also claimed most of Gizz's injuries were self-inflicted, calling her a "liar" and a "troublemaker." This was an 8-year- old little girl found with maggots crawling in a head wound. I don't care if these people are her family or if they truly care about the child; their actions constitute a serious crime against humanity!

A little girl who loved pink. Who dreamed of being a doctor. Who tried to be “good” even when her surroundings weren’t good to her.

Until her death, she naively believed that this inhumane abuse was for her own good.

Although the last few pages of her diary mention that "she couldn't wait for school so that she'd be out of the house;" except she would never get that chance.

Such a case is outrageous. It is significant because behind the news headlines lies a real child, a child with flesh and blood, a child with a voice. Even though her voice is now silenced, her diary records the truth of the insults, ridicule, abuse, and torture she endured.

And in the meantime, as for Gizzy, please don't ignore anyone around you. Even if they're just hesitant to tell you what's happening to them... please give them some time, please believe them!
